How might we design for the next generation Electronic Health Record to improve the efficiency of clinicians understanding patient health summary?

Electronic Health Records are ‘direct translations of paper based charts’, despite spanning complex medical histories. Current EHR systems are not designed to support clinicians’ high-level cognitive processes. Clinicians report frustration with locating, customising, and prioritising data. Improved visualisation of patient information may help clinicians cope with information overload, increase efficiency, improve quality and reduce human error.
